This 14 day South Africa itinerary combines an Eastern Cape safari with the Garden Route, Franschhoek wine country and Cape Town. Expect early game drives, long coastal roads, forest stays, good food and enough contrast between each stop to make two weeks feel much longer.

The route

Eastern Cape Safari - Day 1–3

Start with the part of South Africa that is hardest to replicate elsewhere: early game drives, wildlife outside your room and everything taken care of between safaris.

Stay: Founders Lodge by Mantis — high-end, intimate and worth making a destination in itself. The lodge has just seven suites, Big Five game drives and access to around 25,000 hectares of wilderness.
Getting there: Fly Cape Town (CPT) → Port Elizabeth (PLZ), then collect a rental car.

Highlights

  2. Founders Lodge itself — wildlife views, excellent food and very personal service.
  3. Addo Elephant National Park — optional if you still want more elephants; after Mantis, it adds less of a new experience.
TipStay at least two nights. Add a third if you have the time and budget; safari days start early, so the extra night makes the stay feel much less rushed.

Cape St Francis - Day 4

A deliberate pause after safari: sea air, sleep and very little that needs organising.

Stay: The Sands — luxurious rooms with sea views and restaurants nearby.
Getting there: Around 2.5 hours by car from Founders Lodge.

EatNevermind Bistro (lunch) - Vin de Boeuf (dinner), a favourite.

TipTreat Cape St Francis as a reset rather than a sightseeing stop. It works well because it breaks up the drive without adding another busy day.

Plettenberg Bay & Tsitsikamma - Day 5-6

This is the more active part of the Garden Route: coastal hikes, wildlife and forest scenery, with Plettenberg Bay as a practical base.

Stay: Sky Villa Boutique Hotel
Getting there: Around 2 hours by car from Cape St Francis.

Highlights

  1. Tsitsikamma National Park — Storms River Mouth Trail — an easy 2 km route to the suspension bridge; allow about an hour. If you like adventure you can book the canopy tour.
  2. Monkeyland — use mosquito repellent or wear long trousers.
  3. Robberg Nature Reserve — go early for easier hiking conditions and fewer people. Plan at least 2 hours for the hike (different routes available)
  4. Knysna Heads - easy acccesibble by car for the best views without having to hike

Wilderness - Day 7-8

Time to slow down properly: forest views, an outdoor bath, breakfast baskets and very little reason to leave the lodge.

Stay: Nima Lodge — design-led cabins above the forest with private outdoor space, baths with views and direct access to walking trails.
Getting there: Around 1.5 hours by car from Plettenberg Bay. final road to Nima Lodge is narrow and rough in places, but the setting is absolutely worth it.

EatNima breakfast basket Arrange a picnic through the lodge and cook at your cabin in the evening. We chose a braai because the view was too good to leave.

TipOudtshoorn — optional detour if you specifically want to see ostriches; you may also spot them from the road.

Franschhoek - Day 9-10

Well rested again, head inland for wine estates, long lunches and a completely different landscape. Franschhoek will remind you of Tuscany.

Stay: La Fontaine Boutique Hotel — Franschhoek.
Getting there: Around 5 hours by car from Wilderness.

Highlights

  1. Many wine houses to vist. Our favourites are: 1.Babylonstoren — farmhouse, gardens to explore, wine and the olive oil tour; book ahead. 2. Leeu Passant — try the dessert wine.
  2. Kumanov Perfumery Workshop— email them for booking.

Getting aroundRental car. The wine tram is popular, but not essential if you already have a car and a designated driver.

Cape Town - Day 11-14

Finish with the most varied part of the trip: mountain hikes, beaches, markets, gardens and proper city restaurants, all within short driving distance.

Stay: Urban Elephant Hotels on 16 on Bree worked very well for us — central with secure parking and amazing views over the city including the colorful Bo-Kaap. Gardens and Camps Bay are good alternatives depending on whether you prioritise city access or the coast.
Getting there: Around 1 hour by car from Franschhoek.

Highlights

  1. Lion’s Head — sunrise hike. Book a guided tour.
  2. Table Mountain Aerial Cableway — aim for sunset and check operations on the day, as weather and wind affect the cableway.
  3. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden
  4. Boulders Beach (Pinguins!) & Cape Point Nature Reserve — combine these in one day.
  5. Robben Island — ferry from the V&A Waterfront.
  6. Oranjezicht City Farm Market
  7. Camps Bay & Clifton 2nd Beach - Plan Cape Town beach days more for the views, sun and atmosphere than for swimming — the Atlantic Ocean is very cold.S

Getting aroundWe never felt unsafe, but we were deliberate about basic precautions: lock the car, leave valuables out of sight, use a car or Uber after dark and avoid isolated hikes when few people are around. Parking attendants are common. We usually tipped around R10.

EatBao Down, Scala Pasta Bar, The Lawns at the Roundhouse and Florentin (breakfast/lunch).

TipSouth Africa’s tourism infrastructure can make it easy to move between beautiful places without seeing much of the inequality around them.
